All Ruby Scrunchie Co hair accessories are handmade by Tess (whose middle name is Ruby), a young teen business owner who’s here to spread the scrunchie love!
Ruby Scrunchie Co started from my very own obsession with scrunchies, you’ll never see me without one! During Melbourne’s never-ending lockdowns in 2020, I had the brilliant idea to hand sew some scrunchies with fabric scraps from school. I’m the type of girl who never sits still and I’m always coming up with new ideas and experiences!
I’ve always been a perfectionist and so not satisfied with my hand sewing, I taught myself how to use my grandma’s old Janome sewing machine from the 80s. I researched tonnes of scrunchie designs and after a few different attempts settled on my current style which has a small neat straight stitch at the top. Medium and large sizes seem to be good options and we played around with different fabric and elastic lengths and widths.
I take my own photos using accessories from around our house and love playing with product photography and styling. I especially love packaging up scrunchie orders and riding up to the post box to send them.
Three years later and I’ve bought a new sewing machine, added dog bows, claw clips and hair clip bows, scarf scrunchies, lupin filled heat packs, heaps of new patterns and colours, scrunchies in size small, medium and large and in fabrics cotton, linen, satin, double cloth, velvet plus more!
I’ve had multiple best sellers on Etsy and have over 500 5-star reviews on the platform. I’m also honoured to have my scrunchies stocked in a number of boutique stores across Australia. Plus I attend local markets with loads of new fabric designs when I can – check my socials for upcoming dates!
In 2022 I released my own website (with help from my superstar Mum!) so I can give a better user experience for all of my gorgeous customers.
